What is KEP (registered e-mail) and who needs it?

KEP (Kayıtlı Elektronik Posta, registered electronic mail) is an e-mail system that records when a message was sent and delivered and can be used as legal evidence. Unlike normal e-mail, you can prove who received it, when, and that its content wasn't changed.

What is it used for?

  • Sending formal notices (such as warnings or termination notices) without a notary or registered letter
  • Official correspondence with public institutions
  • Provable commercial notifications between companies

Who should use it?

Capital companies such as joint-stock and limited companies are required to have an electronic notification address. Ask your accountant which system to use and about the current rules. Lawyers, accountants and any business with frequent official correspondence also benefit from KEP.

KEP and e-signatures

Logging in to your KEP account and signing messages usually requires an e-signature or mobile signature. So if you'll use KEP, you'll most likely need an e-signature too; planning both together saves time.

In short: an e-signature answers "who signed?", KEP answers "who received it, and when?"

How to get a KEP address

  1. Choose a KEP provider authorised by the Information and Communication Technologies Authority (BTK).
  2. Apply as an individual or a company; companies provide authorisation documents.
  3. Complete the identity check and agreement.
  4. Your KEP address is set up and you log in with your e-signature.
